Many patients who have taken methotrexate to treat their rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have experienced side effects. Some can be difficult to deal with. ACTEMRA® (tocilizumab) can be taken with or without disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) like methotrexate.
ACTEMRA has been widely studied in 8 key clinical trials, in over 6,000 people living with moderate to severe RA. These studies were used to test how well ACTEMRA would work, and to study the side effects of the drug. In many patients, it can work on its own, without DMARDs to reduce symptoms such as swollen, tender joints. Learn more about these studies.
If you have taken methotrexate and it did not work well for you, talk to your healthcare provider about taking ACTEMRA without methotrexate.
Some people have experienced serious life-threatening liver problems, which required liver transplant or led to death. Your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking ACTEMRA if you develop new or worsening liver problems during treatment with ACTEMRA. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms:
