ACTEMRA® (tocilizumab) is a prescription medicine called an interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor antagonist. It is thought to work by blocking the IL-6 receptor, a key messenger that is believed to be a key source of inflammation.
ACTEMRA is given either as an infusion into a vein at a clinic or as an injection under the skin at home, using a prefilled syringe or autoinjector. Infusions are typically every 4 weeks; home injections are generally once a week or every other week depending on your weight and condition. Your healthcare provider will determine your schedule based on your individual factors (weight, lab results, response).
Common side effects include colds or sinus infections, headache, higher blood pressure, and injection-site reactions. Serious side effects are possible, such as severe infections, allergic reactions, or gastrointestinal perforation. Your doctor will monitor your blood counts, liver tests, and cholesterol; and will screen for tuberculosis before you start. Call your physician immediately if you develop fever or chills, persistent cough, severe abdominal pain, or signs of allergic reaction (trouble breathing, hives, swelling of lips/tongue/throat). Do not take ACTEMRA if you are allergic to tocilizumab, or any of the ingredients in ACTEMRA.
